Yeah, Meshuggah is big in the riffs and so is Tool. But there's also some definite Opeth in there. Or basically just heavy chugga-riffs.

Finally got this and I'm impressed. Great album but Sleep Together was a disappointing way to end a great album.

No way, what is it with people and Sleep Together? It's a fucking awesome song. There is no other way to end the album than with this one song. It's not your typical Porcupine Tree song and that's what's so unique about it. The threatening synths setting in right after the electronics in Way out of Here are perfect. Another thing is, when have you ever heard Steven Wilson with that approach on the vocals (chorus). Not to mention the egyptian sounding string arrangements throughout the song.

Well... I like the song.

Meh, I didn't care for it because I thought it was rather bland in comparison to the rest of the album. I'd rate the songs like so...
Fear of a Blank Planet - 4
My Ashes - 4.5
Anesthetize - 5
Sentimental - 4.5
Way Out of Here - 4.5
Sleep Together - 3

Sleep Together is pretty much the worst track, but still above average

This cd owns, i love it. My only problem with it is the whole "i hate my parents" kind of attitude with the lyrics. Its only for a couple songs though. This Message Edited On 02.09.08

it's only after the 20th or so listen that i've actually gauged how depressing the lyrical content is.

still a great album, mind.

what I don't like about this album is all the pills stuff (it would be interesting to count how many times the word pill is used), but the title track captures that "i hate my parents" stuff pretty well. though, of course, steve wilson is carrying these themes to excess. being 19 years old myself, I don't know anyone on whom his description of a teenager fits. maybe the situation is different here in Austria, but I don't think that

musically it is absolutely mindblowing.

I don't know, I haven't read the novel. I just know Steve admitted in an interview the lyrics were influenced by it.

This is probably my least favorite PT album I own, but the title track, Anethetize, and Way Out of Here are really awesome.

Way Out of Here's chorus is so godly.

Indeed, I think the verse parts leading up to it is an important factor, especially the end of the second verse. Just gets me everytime.
