One of their better albums, in my opinion. They had a good run from here to Colors. After that is kinda eh to me.

I enjoy their last three recordings, don't get me wrong, but they just aren't as engaging as their first four LPs to my ears. It kinda feels like they're trying a bit too hard to shove those "quirky" sections" in. Despite the fact that their musicianship is vastly improving with each release, their songwriting is suffering big time.

that's how i felt too, weirdness for the sake of weirdness. last record felt really forced in some spots although i still liked it.

I can't understand how bands can get better as musicians and yet worse as songwriters as their careers progress, just look at Mastodon...

It seems a lot of bands decide to opt for making their material more "fun" than legitimately engaging and interesting or emotionally gripping as time goes on. Basically, give yourself a gimmick and run with it so that your band becomes synonymous with it. These guys, it seems, now have the "random-genre-change" gimmick. I wouldn't discredit Mastodon entirely just yet. Evidently, Crack the Skye's recordings were very emotionally intense for the band, so I understand their choosing to create a "fun" record as a sort of palette cleanser.

Ah yes, back when BTBAM didn't have to write 15 minute unstructured songs. They're second best album behind TSC.

None of the songs on this album are lame. I'm not even sure what lame means other than you dislike it which I guess is your opinion.

A remake of this album would be amazing.
