Magnolia really was the perfect lead single here. I thought it was a tasty jam that obviously signaled a retvrn to the metal, but it wasn't until I heard the entirety of the album where it really clicked . The main riff is just has so much teeth

Magnolia is by far the best track here.

It's a very complete song from start to finish, I wish they took the same approach to Revelator instead of adding that Ulver guitar melody toward the end of the song.

The ulver bit is a tad extraneous, but doesn't really detract the song meaningfully for me. I think it's even fine conceptually, just a tad too long

Doberman, Amethyst, Winona and the closer are the ones I keep coming back to off this, but it's all excellent. My AOTY to this point probably

Hawks i can't tell if you're trying to contrarian the hypetrain or this is a serious number drop but either way, I wish u could see what I see in this

I will say Magnolia is actually near the bottom of my track ranking here tho

You know me. I'm not doing it just to be a contrarian lol.

Winona, Revelator, Doberman, Amethyst, and Orange Tree are all better… maybe Body Behavior and Heathen too.

Magnolia's not as developed as I usually expect from a Deafheaven song, but for what it is, it's great. Black Brick kinda does that song better.

It's a pure throwback to 90s Norwegian bm which is probably why I love it so much.

it's weird to say this about a 4 minute song but given Deafheaven's usual proficiency in long epics I found it...incomplete-sounding at first? I've came around but i'd still take Revelator and Black Brick over it...notice how both of them are longer?

Length of the song means nothing to me tbh lol. If its a ripper I don't care how long/short it is.

I'm used to Deafheaven songs hitting that higher gear in atmospherics and emotional bits and I think they simply have stronger tracks for that here than Magnolia tbh

HAHAHAHA tbf I love this band overall. Roads, Sunbather and Bermuda are some of my fav bm albums ever. Then they have OCHL which is one of the worst albums I've ever heard. Then they have this and Infinite Granite that fall in the good category. They're all over the place for me.

Also Tundra has changed his Poppy rating at least 20 times at this point.

I've never really understood WHY OCHL is one of the worst you've ever heard, it definitely lightened up but the emotional bits still get to me so I'm sorry but I have to disagree
