Listening to Discarnate and reading the lyrics now knowing the context of the album it hits so much harder. As if it didnt already hit hard enough!

discarnate was a tricky song to write as it came from being indoctrinated into bigoted worldviews early on by very right-wing and religious family members and the guilt of essentially contributing to other people's misery. thankfully i 'outgrew' that pretty early in adulthood but being indoctrinated at a very formative age really does mean you have to constantly keep your brain in check because it teaches you bigotry as a reflex. it made me realize there's so much more strength in admitting your faults and learning to be better but it's not a linear journey by any means.

Thats very interesting insight!
Really like reading the lyrics to this record while listening to it
Can relate to it to some degree as well having some really religious aunts on my dads side of the family!

I feel that. Just read the lyrics and I can relate too as I grew up in a conservative Pentecostal family and church. My family was great but our church was pure American Christianity dogshit. All nationalism, homophobia and capitalism boosting disguised as religion. Metal music and South Park actually were two main factors in making me think 'Wait, maybe this is all bullshit' as a teen.

i honestly can't remember what it was for me that made me realize my worldview was entirely wrong but it's the reason for my personal connection to fascism and bigotry. i had some accusations of being insincere and it all being for show and frankly i wish that were the case. i suppose scepticism and apathy is a natural reflex for some but i'll always wear my heart on my sleeve despite the vulnerability that comes with.

It’s an important thing to note too that you can come back from those destructive views. The older I get the more harmful I realize “cancelling” other people for their views can be. You’re practically fast-tracking whoever is on the receiving end into going down a more heinous path

i agree - ostracizing those with opposing views only makes it more likely they'll end up in an awful rabbit hole. it's a nuanced and complicated issue with no objectively correct answers.
