@vastwilderness That initial enumeration oozing with displeasement, insinuates an ideological position no one in this thread has thus far espoused. I agree Beethoven is probably superior to a random punk band, but the parameters that foreground that assessment are still personal, socially constructed, subjective. And one can certainly construe criteria for judging instrumental aptitude or compositional quality, but those criteria are still socially constructed and tied to the subjective perspective of those who've construed them.
Also, what's so ridiculous about referring to bands mixing shoegaze with black-metal and hints of post metal as 'Blackgaze'?

There is no logical arguement that can prove that a random garage punk band is worse or better than Beethoven.

I don’t know if elvenefris is still overrated, since this is the only place I still frequent from time to time and we don’t talk about it a lot, but it was absurdly overhyped throughout the 00s. Tying it back to your original premise, there’s definitely been a lot of more deserving albums that aren’t sitting at a 4.2 rn

@inhox & Shadow: I would contend that there be an ontological state not contingent on human perception, however our ability to know the world around us will always be clouded by our own subjective frames of reference. Thus, even if there is an objective reality, we can never know of such a reality, and thus the concept of one is rather inapplicable.

reality isn't real nor does it exist
|
| |
reality is as it is perceived
therefore reality is real on an individual basis
you might see art as the sharing of one's reality so that it might intermingle with the reality of another

" but it was absurdly overhyped throughout the 00s. "
it was no Blackwater Park though...

@vastwilderness You can't just postulate some mythological 'natural order' as the basis for Beethoven's apparent superiority over others or the discrepancies between the paintings of Jackson Pollock and Leonardo Da Vinci. Those difference are ultimately subjectively percieved, assessed by subjects, tied to their interpretations, and no matter how much we may agree with those interpretations, they're not objective. Also, postmodernism is far from nonsense actually.

"There are objective states of melody and harmony"
Explain
Is dissonant music objectively bad then?

@vastwd: Correction, something invented is socially constructed, and the states that it produces and how we interpret those states are, well tied to subjective perception and thus subjective. Melody and harmony only exist as concepts because subjects construed them and they are in a sense derived from the very existence of those subjects. We know them as phenomenological states, not objective noumenological states. Skill and merit are ultimately about as objective as the language used to interpret, define and formulate them. There is nothing particularly 'objective' about things we cannot be detached from the existence of a subject or multiple subjects, be it ontologically or epistemically.
