Needs time.

Lots.

Lots and lots of time.

Took me like a full month and 15 listens to feel about it the way I do now.

This was immediate for me, but for a while I thought my score was too high, then recently realized it's correct.

I'm enjoying different parts of this more with each listen but Walk It Back, Born to Beg, and the t/t still only feel like tiresome filler. The energetic tracks on the first half sound very samey to me too, but there's some gold here, for sure

While Walk It Back and the title track are definitely the least immediately appealing tracks the reality is that they are the greatest encapsulations of the development their sound has taken on this album and because of that are arguably among the most important ones here. It seems that the extent to which people have embraced those two tracks is a good indicator of how much one has embraced the album overall.

I mean, if we're talking about progression, that's cool and all, though this is the first National album I've taken multiple serious listens to and whether they're forging new ground there or not, they just come off as dull imo

glad you guys are finding more in it than I am

Walk it Back works better live, and so does Empire Line, even though it's still an odd one.

Ash this is one of the most subtle bands you'll come across, so you should really give their middle few albums a lot of time and listens to properly get into this band.

Well both of those tracks are in my bottom 4 on here ("Walk It Back" probably being my least favorite), and I freaking love this album, so...

Walk It Back is such a beautifully shifting, flowing song. Definitely one of the most subtle here though.

Sorry Doof, really like the back half of "Walk It Back" but I'm struggling with the front, still find the chorus a bit repetitive and grating

I thought it was boring at first but by the second listen I was absolutely head-over-heels. If you think its boring you probably just gotta let it sink in deeper. Or you might still be bored, idk you lmao.
