Lol u got that all wrong.

It's BECAUSE I FEEL USED that I can't enjoy that kind of approach to music. I'm an emotional listener, not a rational one. I don't want to be 'convinced' of anything when I'm listening to music, I don't actively go out to get that out of my music listening experiences.

Like I said, it just doesn't feel like it flows naturally out of most (not all) artists, like it's something forced out and I hate that.

" while I listen to MC Dogshit or whatever the fucker's name is like he's giving this massive revolutionary speech about race, and police-state while shouting bitchass nigga bitch every few bars."

Are you talking about Kendrick Lamar?

Nah, I didn't like that album either, but not because political reasons (blacker the berry is probably the best song in that album, honestly).

Just to be clear I wasn't dissing Kendrick Lamar but I've heard that about him before

I liked Good Kid a lot, didn't like what I heard of Pimp but those are the only two hip hop albums I own/have listened to

Why would someone using the words "bitch ass nigga" take away from their message anyways? Are people not allowed to be angry and use words that angry people use?

I think the point is more so it can sound awkward or cringy in some cases, not necessarily that it's bad in every context. Idk though, I'm not Rabidfish. I'm just an incredibly bored person.

I think when you approach a delicate subject in a song full on aggression mode without the capacity to be self-conscious and know your limitations (of the media and personal alike) you probably will sound like a 12 year-old having a tantrum.

It's alright to be emotional when you are singing a song, but when it starts to feel like you're giving a speech, it makes you sound dumb and out of your water.

But hey, if that's what you look after in your political leaders, good for ya mate!

Was MLK Jr out of his water when he game his emotional and politically charged I Have A Dream speech?

Most political speeches are emotional. In fact, ALL of them are. Every policy ever created is based around an emotional response to something. Even economical policies. That's life man. Music reflects what's going on.

I'm with fish in that I don't care much for politics in my music. Never have. I won't dismiss it, but it's just not my thing. When it's more subtle I don't mind, but when the bulk of a song/album is about racial tension and the government I just don't really relate or care.

I'm not with fish in that they didn't make the same album for the third time in a row or I'd probably love this lol.

Also, not even necessarily talking about this album concerning politics. I've only listed to it a few times and didn't pay too much mind to the lyrics other than Legend Has It.

dude I have a dream speech is not a good example: It may be constructed around emotion, and it's probably the best improvised speech ever recorded in human history (the 2nd half, at least) but MLK was FAAR from being 'emotional' (as in, not in control of his words and actions) when giving it.

Dude was well educated and had a natural talent and charsima, besides having a lot of experience up to that point.

A musician does NOT. It's not how music WORKS. But since you fail to differentiate between having your political values transpire in your music naturally (like all cultural background of an artist ends up doing) and making your music actively political, looking to make a statement that is OBJECTIVELY MADE TO BE A POLITICAL ONE BY YOU, THE ARTIST, MAKING YOU A POLITICAL AGENT SUBJECT, AS SUCH, TO A DIFFERENT SET OF RULES WITH WHICH YOUR WORK WILL BE ANALYZED then there's not point continuing this discussion, cuz we do not even listen to music the same way and never will.

"'emotional' (as in, not in control of his words and actions)"

It appears we have different takes on the word emotional. To me emotional just means that they have passion. That's why we say "don't get OVERLY emotional," and "stop being SO emotional." I've never thought of or heard emotional being used to mean not-in-control ever.

This is just a rambling mess that I don't even know how to approach.

yea... I got 'emotional' about it

Maybe now u get it lol

let me make it more 'rational' and simple: If you sing a song it will be judged and critized by certain standards. When you release a political statement in the form of a song and actively go out of your way to make it clear that that was your intention, then it will be judged and critized under a different set of standards.

a political speech has a level of depth, and work put into it that's very VERY (cannot stress how much) hard to replicate in a song that also has to be, you know, good and shit (which is hard in a whole different way). This usually ends up in failure, with half-assed politics 'stuff' lyrics and music that doesn't feel organic.

But hey, you obviously don't see it this way so why even bother.
