"I don't think these guys know what to do with the sound they've created"
lmao they did NOT create this sound

i took that to mean their specific sound, not blackgaze in general which nobody said they invented.

i mean even then, biggest problem with deafheaven on every album is how generic they are
|
| |
>quits black metal
>plays generic shoegaze

idk how it's generic when they change their style on every album and were among the first to start doing it significantly in the first place. they wrote a blackgaze song for Rise of Caligula in 2009 that was basically proto-dfhvn.

Not gonna pick bones with any of the earlier shit, but you yourself have criticised this one for its generic elements on several occasions, all the new singles have been run of the mill alt/gaze, and the stylistic changes on OCHL aped corny rock cliches with rarely seen shamelessness so I kinda understand that point

in retrospect i do like it when gazer bands do dumb rock stuff like that tho, this album was just generally clunky with its writing everywhere

adding more indie elements is hardly a fresh concept, all they do is rip off different artists. they were FAR from the first to do it, by the time Roads to Judah came out I was like... really? isn't this style dead by now? the market was so saturated with blackgaze by then that I'd already gotten tired of it.

deafheaven always reeked of genre tourism to me anyway, there's no real heart in their music. also their vocalist is probably the biggest goober i've ever seen. they just seemed oddly plagiaristic but they missed the point by having no real emotional core to their music.

nadja?

Yeah Nadja’s prob the closest parallel but even there feels like with Nadia shoegaze is the texture that clarifies the drone, Angelic Process feels the other way around
Although pre sure I’m talking out my ass now
