loveless is memorable as hell from start to finish
this is fun if youre into the genre but nothing special

Big vice versa - Loveless is one big blur past the opening pair, every track here is much more accentuated in sequencing (especially since it falls into 3 distinct thirds)

I always feel like bumping this to a 5 every time I don't hear it for a month or two

I both wanna bump and drop my rating by one increment lol, so agreed and disagreed

"Unfair to say that given how long Loveless had to mythologise itself."
Loveless was a classic not long after it was released.
"If this had come out in '93, it would be viewed in completely different terms"
You could day that about most of the albums released in 2013. A moot point.

"Loveless was a classic not long after it was released."
20+ years of being a genre-definer is different from being quickly established as an instant classic
"You could day that about most of the albums released in 2013. A moot point."
yes, if looked at in the most unhelpfully broad terms. this is an upgrade on production value and general beefing-up of the Loveless sound, while also landing some of their best psyched out fare (if i am = most underrated mbv track). this would have had a far bigger role in shaping this album's reception if released within close proximity to Loveless, but instead it had to contend with whether or not it lived up to a two decade legacy that this band's hagiographers had virtually consigned to the world of moot points from the word go. whether or not the band would have been able to make this in 1993 (the final 3 excepted) is another question, but we're far enough into what-ifs already

not sure why you find this so incredibly relevant, considering that the songwriting is comparatively stale and uninteresting

johnnyofthewell is a classic

you can argue alternate history and potential influence with ghandhi all day but the fact of the matter is that this album is inoffensively pleasant and little more
|

this band has always been an aesthetic deal imo, pretty much all their work aside from You Made Me Realise is on shaky ground if you focus on songwriting. Isn't Anything probably has their most interesting songwriting bc it was their most dynamically volatile, fbofw. Loveless has equally stale and overall less interesting songwriting than this (although tbf the most 'interesting' bits work less well)
also, actually, New You + the opener have excellent songwriting so idk
similar to songwriting, calling one mbv album inoffensively pleasant is pretty dubious if you start scrutinising the others. most of this whole genre can be categorised that way, often as a direct result of their influence

> Loveless has equally stale and overall less interesting songwriting than this
and yet no matter how much most music wears off me in time, that's one of the albums that remains fresh and entrancing to this day
whereas this one never really succeeded in capturing my full attention despite repeated attempts since 2013

i kinda get what you mean. i guess its fair that production is more important here than in other genres, but if the music itself doesnt really do much, how much can production really elevate it?

Yeah, but what if it came out in 1967?
The world would never be the same I reckon...
