Yeah this band does seem to be being discussed (and ranked) even more than usual as of late.

I think I should listen to GR and Watershed more, will do that in a couple days.

Quite a few rankings placed GR in the Top 5 if I recall correctly.

GR was my first opeth. Loved the organ on that album

Ghost Reveries has a lot of sentimental value for me as it was the first Opeth album (and probably the first "progressive" album) I heard back when I was about 12 or 13.

GR rules, but I'd put the first 5 records above it. Its def their best post-BWP though

ghost has flip flopped from being one of my favs to one of my least favs, but rn its right behind this and morningrise.

most distinct and unique atmosphere of any of their albums, also arguably best production and vocal performance

I'd give most of those to MAYH. Obviously the production isn't anywhere near as polished on MAYH but that's what I love about it, it gives the album such a powerful atmosphere.

vocally i thnk ghost kills mayh but yeah the production on that one is special. probably their darkest-sounding album, pretty rough production but also very fitting.

i just love all the noises, keys, strings, organs etc on ghost. always though that the album sounded like a haunted house

JT, you've been jamming 'Peth for far longer than I have.

I prob first listened to 'em like 4-5 years ago at the most.

Only really came to appreciate their music recently though.

There's something about Mikael's vocals on MAYH that makes them stand out for me. Definitely my favourite vocal performance of his even if it's not as technically accomplished as his singing on Ghost Reveries and other later Opeth albums.

I really don't care that much for Mikael's vox personally, for me they compliment Opeth's music rather than stand out in their own right.

It's my opinion though.

I mean, sure, the man does some cool performances here and there, but I really don't think about that when I listen to 'Peth.

he's in my top 5 harsh vocalists (in his prime) and probably top 20 singers

Agreed. His harsh vocals are up there with the best. So much power, and they're easy to decipher.

Opinions guys.

Don't get me wrong, he suits the music perfectly, but I really don't worship the man as a vocalist.

Again, opinions.
