@Sabrutin: I mean I don't expect 2018 production values on a 1970s album, but from that standpoint, Stained Class definitely pales in comparison to other releases in rock/metal. I'd say the first few Black Sabbath albums were produced a fair bit better, as well as albums like Led Zeppelin III and 2112. Notice how all of those are older than this album.

The title track from the S/T Black Sabbath album is still crushing to this day for its age.
This just feels hopelessly dated.

If by "hopelessy dated" you mean "excellent dynamic sound where everything has a polished recording and feels very organic, damn I wish modern music still sounded like this" then I agree.
"The title track from the S/T Black Sabbath album is still crushing to this day for its age."
3:15~3:30 from Stained Class' t/t is just as thundering as any Sabbath imo. (and I'm not disagreeing about Sabbath btw)
"I don't expect 2018 production values on a 1970s album"
Me neither considering how worse it would probably sound.
don't take the aggression too personal I'm just kinda triggered

[2] hard sab, a lot of modern metal sounds plastic-y and harmless

like i acquiesce that a lot of old metal especially underground and niche stuff is underproduced, but id rather have underproduced than overproduced
listen to a lot of modern thrash and tech death and pretty much the only redeeming quality of the production is that its loud and powerful, but it almost sounds like they made it using default samples in fl studio or something, rather than actual instruments
it undermines the songwriting and ability of the musicians, and it makes generic/uninspired compositions (see bands like havok, warbringer etc) almost grating to listen to, rather than meh okay

strike u know what i mean right, compare bonded by blood with any 2000s exodus and the difference is night and day

Agent, you would call Black Sabbath (the track) "hopelessly dated" if they had a good singer, lol.

I mean that the production here seems especially thin for 70s standards.
|

Yeah, and the production in Black Sabbath sounds so... Modern? Idk.

No, Alex.
But I can't see anyone other than Ozzy really making the song what it was vocally anyway, so

It sounded really ahead of its time to me, like it took at least a decade for other bands to surpass it.

The production of Black Sabbath sounds ahead of its time? Really?

Yeah, especially for a 1970 album it sounds fucking amazing.
|

I mean, it sounds good... But that's about it, at least for me. But eh, the only time I've been annoyed with the production of something was a recording made in 1936 and I've never been impressed by the production of something, so whatever.

and 2018 production values have been very hit or miss for me. Silent Planet's newest was produced pretty meh, but the new Lithium Dawn's production is great.

Production is usually not my main gripe anyway.
This album just feels... off, to me. Maybe it just needs more listens, idk.

"strike u know what i mean right, compare bonded by blood with any 2000s exodus and the difference is night and day"
Yeah big difference. BBB was gritty and raw even by 1985's standards, and that's why I love it. Keep polished production for either more melodic metal or pop music.
@Bat the production is thin here, but it sounds pleasant, and everything has good clarity for 1978. Classic album.

Yeah, I guess I just find Halford's vocals on certain tracks annoying as fuck, and that was only amplified by the production. He did great when he was trying to restrain himself on Better By You, Better Than Me though
