Just re-listened. This album is strangely enjoyable all the way through, but it does have its serious flaws. The horrendous lyrics and LaBrie's vocals are obvious, but it also dawned on me how ridiculous the music is sometimes.
For example A Nightmare To Remember - while the ominous, symphonic parts are very welcome, they sound as though pre-schoolers were trying to be creepy. Or 60-year-olds trying to be "hip and square", in other words only scratching the surface and coming across as a poor imitation. They should have listened to more black metal before they wrote those parts, lel

^^ Lol agreed. But that's just DT cheesyness for you. I mean, what do you expect when vocalist is named LaBrie?

Haha yeah. And that cute growl-like thing they do when they're trying to be aggressive. Is it LaBrie who does it, or Portnoy?

I thought that Portnoy's vocals and the blast beats ruled hard when this first came out, but now it's so cheesy and cringe-worthy. The clean section in that song is exceptionally good though.

Talk of the new album prompted me to revisit "The Count of Tuscany" - the last DT song that really spoke to me. Still dig it.
