AllMusic's reviewer start's his review with this statement:
"First off, a warning: the best way to encounter Mastodon's Crack the Skye for the first time is with headphones."
I completely agree. My first encounter with Mastodon's fifth record was via the speakers. In the beggining i wasn't impressed and i got bored at the 5th track. My first mark was 3.
However i bought the album and i got hooked with the last 2 songs. I listen to the whole album 3 or 4 times in a row and i was really impressed.
Crack The Skye needs some time to get used to, and once you do, you will be rewarded.
I don't know if Mastodon's previous works are of that quality but i will check them out.

In my opinion The Czar is the most interesting song of the album, each detail in this song is well measured and the solo is great : it's not just being fast for the sake of being so, it is melodic and suits the rhythm section well.
I agree with the bad points quoted in the review. Sometimes the technicality is not enough (or it is maybe too much) to make a good song, but what is the most frustrating about this album, and this band in general, are the vocals. They aren't good singers and what's more singing together can totally ruin the song.
This album is frustrating because it has a lot of potential but finally doesn't manage to impress.

Anyone know if Scott Kelly is gonna make an appearance on 'The Hunter'? His vocals are way better than anyone in Mastodon.

"except it actually does"
Actually it depends on what you usually listen to. It's surely impressing in comparison with a lot of bands.

I hate this album

and second of all...
"Actually it depends on what you usually listen to"
erm... in fact, that's something that happens with every album of every musical genre. You will not hear a Gaga fan telling people "Morbid Angel is pretty fuckin awesome", so...

the "Gaga-Morbid Angel" argument?
|

"You will not hear a Gaga fan telling people "Morbid Angel is pretty fuckin awesome""
I think it's quite narrow minded to say that.
There actually are people who are open to any kind of music, heavy music, or as generic and mainstream as it gets.

i liked them but this is my favourite mastodon

Totally agree, but I think that it is extremely rare to hear such a contradictory musical taste.
