Jane Doe was always my “this is the best album ever” album but this one’s dethroned it. Maybe if I go through another horrible breakup that’ll be back in the mix. Dirt by Alice In Chains too. The problem is I just don’t relate to those albums lyrically so much anymore. This one still hits all the right notes for me personally, and sonically it’s just so damn diverse and creative. I didn’t know I needed a song like Gratitude in my life until I heard it. I’m still amazed they pulled something like that off.
Shit, even when Greyhound came out I fucked off at work and listened to the livestream out in my car and I teared up a bit and literally sent “this is the best song they’ve ever made” to my Foxing loving friend. I’m astonished that they dropped their best song ever at that point and then came out with a record that has a few songs that are EVEN BETTER. Everything about it is perfect, shit even the album rollout was flawless.

It's funny because when Greyhound came out I loved it, but was still a tad upset that they wouldn't just let the screams rip like they'd shown hints of being able to do forever. I got the promo for the album crazy early, like over a month in advance (for reference, it's usually just a week or two at most). When Secret History and Hell 99 hit me back to back without warning, I was grinning the biggest smile I've ever gotten from music for like an hour straight. And the longer the album went on maintaining similar vibes the happier I was with it. Keeping it a secret for that long was one of the hardest things I've had to do on Sputnik lmao.

Well I gotta say man, this review is my favorite I’ve ever read on sput. I’d never been so hyped for an album and it delivered in every way. So I’d say you did a damn good job amigo
That solo into the second verse followed by that build around 3 mins in was when I knew we were in for something special. I’m not exaggerating I was literally crying out in my car, it was that beautiful to me.

I'm happy this album means as much to someone else here.
My only critique is that I really wish they would have waited to release Hell 99 as a single until after the album dropped. I just wanted everyone to walk into this as unsuspectingly as I did.

I almost wish they didn’t release Greyhound as a single, I would’ve loved for that 8 minute behemoth to have been a complete surprise, but I can’t really think of anything that would’ve been a better lead single. Barking seems like the obvious pick but that really might’ve given people the wrong impression. From a songwriting perspective it’s easily the safest song here, they probably didn’t want people to think they recorded a bunch of alt rock tunes.
I think Hell 99 was a solid pick for a single tho tbh, yeah being surprised like that would’ve been cool but they still had Secret History in their back pocket, when I saw Hell 99 was the second track I thought the first was going to be some kind of slow burn a la Lit Me Up.
Well that was fucking wrong of me lol

Same man, I don’t think many are as stoked on this record as we are, at least not on sput. I could talk about this record for hours haha

When I listened in full, only Greyhound had been released and the album was like 5-6 weeks away (iirc). Selfishly I'd have loved for the intensity of this album to remain a complete surprise with just Greyhound as the single. With that said, if they were going to release a 2nd single as they did, I also thought of Barking -- maybe Gratitude if they wanted to reveal a hint of the direction without giving away that they'd gone full blown Daisy. I'm sure there are still plenty of people who aren't diehard fans and went into the album with no prior exposure to Hell 99 or even Greyhound, so that must've been a wake up call when Secret History got about a minute and a half in, lol.

Hours? Let's be real man, we'll be talking about this for years 😂 I recently checked my streaming stats and this album is still running away with 2025 for me as my most played. It's not even close, either. This time last year I was still sitting on that promo. It's been a full year and I just haven't stopped obsessing.

Seriously digging this, but I feel like the mix is a bit rough around the edges. lot of mid-low frequencies, which take away from the impact of when the band goes in full throttle. Will keep spinning this, though.

Idk to me everything feels perfectly placed, the mix can be very rough but I always felt that was intentional

Something about this record captures the feeling of Right Now for me in a way that no other has since.
I don't want to overanalyze, but the end of Hall of Frozen Heads feels like it's capturing something that's in the aether right now, with the increasing religiosity in the culture. It's a personal truth capturing something Big that's changing (or at least that's the feeling).

I’m not a spiritual person but I think with mushrooms and Hall of Frozen Heads on repeat I could probably transcend reality

@confessed
You totally should man
Basically a year on and I like it even more than when it dropped. I would say Barking has grown on me a lot since first listen, it felt very basic but I think we needed a song like that after the first five. Kentucky McDonald’s has grown off of me. It feels like a lesser Looks Like Nothing, the build isn’t as interesting and neither is the payoff… but it’s still great and has some of my favorite lyrics on the album
“Over it, a titanic end, a fiery wreck, something magnificent
I’m learning a lesson
I’m humbled for pleasure
Choked on my heartbeat
I’m grateful for nothing
Over it, nothing to bend, pablum extant to something significant
I stared at the glow until I saw, I’m mediocre…
And there’s nothing worse.”
Dead Cat and Dead Internet at this point are the odd men out. I still like that they threw a heavier track in there at the end surrounded by 3 of the softest songs on the record but it’s just not as strong as Secret History or Hell 99 so it doesn’t feel quite as effective.
Used to really not like Cry Baby but I think narratively it’s a perfect cap to this record and I wouldn’t change it a bit. Beautiful record, no exaggeration it’s probably my favorite album ever.

Well, I said it and I meant it. If they go out with this, they went out on top.
The statement said that their shows in St Louis and Chicago will be their last for the foreseeable future. I’m not seeing any tour dates on their website but im so glad that the last time I see these guys wasn’t as a fucking opener

glad I got to see em once when they came to a tiny venue in Sydney. they played most of the songs from NMG and Eric signed my Foxing shirt, such a good gig
