Literally go into any metal group on social media that's had Sleep Token discourse and you'll see dozens of people complain that they "aren't metal enough" and shouldn't be talked about."
I hate to burst your bubble, but that discourse will never go away. Every decade or so, there's a new band that becomes the metal scene's punching bag for not being metal enough. In the 2000s it was Avenged Sevenfold (among others of course), in the 2010s it was Ghost, and now it's Sleep Token. Elitists will always be elitists... and while that doesn't make it right, it just is what it is

The narrative around this has changed now, but back then, I'd be inclined to say Alice in Chains. They kept getting opening slots for thrash and trad metal shows, and got a lot of hostile responses for being out of place among the other bands

To clarify, the reason I'm picking AiC is because they were getting more of a metal push than the other grunge bands during that time, so promoters were actively trying to market them in that direction. Which is why they got shit on by so many metalheads, basically for not "staying in their lane". And, as we've seen with other bands like Ghost and A7X, it forms a bit of a pattern among elitsts

"I'm even less sure now.." i'm considerably younger, don't fangirl over MGK (meh artist and I don't like the deep timbre to his voice)/BVB (they're good but not a top fav), and i have a completely different project that you would likely never mistake for Snide's projects.
