Let's see if this band can win me over entirely. I have a hard time enjoying bands that do atmospheric stuff as an excuse for lazy songwriting (Tesseract) outside of the Black Metal or Shoegaze sphere.

on my third listen and I have to say I'm disappointed having been so hyped up
needs more listens still though obviously

This is better than Gore and could compete with KNY but not better than any other album of theirs

"This has to be the best album of the last two centuries. Has to be."
How ridiculous

Abe fucking crushes this whole album. The drums sound incredible, especially at the end of spell. So full.
Error, Spell of mathematics, Pompeji and this link is dead are my faves. Which is sweet cuz they all flow into one another. I've had those 4 songs on repeat all day. Just can't get into headless at all. Everything else ranges from good to amazing.

Oh I even read it as decades haha
Still ridiculous

this is certifiably better than kny, gore, adrenaline and DE

About the 5 thing, i have sort of a weird opinion on that.
I can't give a 5 to an album i just started listening. A 5 is something that needs to stand the test of time. How can i 5 an album if i don't know how it will hold up in a year or two?
It might get better, worse, who knows?

halfway through and this doesn't have the highlights or choruses of kny so far. genesis, urantia and error have all been pretty chorus-challenged ngl

you 5 it before you have even heard it, that way it rests easy on your mind

I wouldn't say lacking the grand choruses of DE and KNY is a bad thing, I think it works in this album's favor as in some of Deftones' previous albums
|
| |
not being contingent on choruses is one thing, but while error definitely makes up with it with that bridge/extended coda, i feel the other two are missing something; huge verses with no finish
|
| |
at the moment I can't confidently say I prefer this to gore, but then I haven't listened to gore in a couple of years so who knows
|
| |
Never understood the Deftones hype, listened to this once was pretty meh.
