it's a chore but for me it was one of those albums that's so pompous and ridiculous that I'm like, OK FINE I'LL OBLIGE
and also FJM is so aware of his own bullshit that it's borderline okay

It's a chore at first but idk after like 5 listens or so I was well into it

Still not sure how I feel about FJM basically laughing at his fanbase on this album. Like I feel like I'm being insulted and made fun of, but I'm too stupid to get it

I just love how he knew the backlash that would come from this album, it's an obvious thing to say but just how meta he's willing get really appeals to me. Some people think he's a cunt for it but that's a cop out.

kinda lame that he followed it up with a boring back-to-basics record

I like the endless cynicism and biting wit on this tbh, rewards repeated listens.

agreed, as much as I like GFC it felt just a bit too safe, he went back to the themes he knew people liked from Honeybear and toned down the snarkiness

having said all of this my favourite FJM song is still Holy Shit and I find it heartwarmingly sincere

I feel like his last three albums are a trilogy on depression as a theme. Honeybear was "I'm in love now, maybe not everything is shit". This one is "I got everything I ever wanted but I'm more depressed than ever before" & GFC is "I'm self medicating with LSD microdoses now and try to focus less on myself". Which is why I get when people don't like this album. They don't like staring into the abyss, while standing at the edge is fun.

I'd never thought about it like that but I can definitely feel that, especially the part Honeybear would play in it.
For me GFC is like the novocaine of Honeybear wearing off, and Josh realising that life can always throw curve balls- his relationship with Emma isn't perfect but nothing is and it's something he just has to work on. I think thematically GFC is definitely a sequel or follow-up to Honeybear.

magic mountain is the best song ever

whole album kind of got unfairly shafted
magic mountain is great but my favorite is god of love, the imagery of jesus returning just to basically get called out for a bunch of bullshit feels exactly like where we're at in humanity

God of Love live was something else

"where we're at in humanity"
I don't know of any other country that has the outrage culture the US has, so keep me out of this :D

I have a soft spot for FJM I guess. Every record of him (even his last one) is at least a 4 for me.

His music to me is so thought out/smooth. I love his chord progressions, and I've found that I use a lot a lot of diminished chords in my song sketches, because of him. It's just something I feel like I don't hear *too* much of in this area of music. His voice is also very easy to listen to as well, inviting really.
