ok so i have a report

Phobocosm were pretty good. tbh they were just a bit "normal-sounding" compared to the other 3 bands though. nothing really wrong with playing some heavy ass death metal though, even if it is a bit run-of-the-mill.

Zhrine were dope. they are at least as clean-cut and hipster-looking as the Deafheaven dudes, which was kinda funny given how over-the-top metal-looking Mitochondrion were next. the bassist had a cool bass stick thingy

Ulcerate were the shit. my show closed with 'End the Hope' instead of EIF, which I was ok with since they're both dope songs. JSM killed it ofc

the Zhrine drummer and vocalist were to the side of and almost behind the stage (where they could see behind a stack of amps) pretty much just 'miring Jamie for a solid 4 minutes

the vocalist at one point was gesturing toward Jamie and the drummer was literally just like ¯_(ツ)_/¯ in response

it was weird, the Zhrine drummer was awesome and the Phobocosm guy was also great (Mitochondrion guy was solid as well but they never really put a lot of emphasis on drums live or in studio) but as soon as Jamie started ripping into his giantass kit everything else seemed kinda lame in retrospect

Well there's no shame in being beaten by the best. When I saw them with Altars I spoke to the drummer and he was almost as big a fanboy as me, almost...

Really enjoyed this show. New Ulcerate album is great as well.

Reminds me a lot of Gorguts in that it sounds like a bunch of random notes put together with a carrying melody but after a couple listens it makes total sense.

One of my gripes with this band, sometimes a good portion of the songs don't ever reveal themselves to me, the drums are so damn insane and loud it leaves a lot of sections sounding exactly the same to me even after repeated listens. Especially the sections with blast beats, a little too out of control too often for my liking at times.
