no i agree that if you want to get into a genre what better place to start than with the proto artists of that genre.

it all depends on what the person finds more accessible. if they dont like the proto artists they might be turned off the genre. i started with the later stuff and came to like the classics that way.

eh it only works if you already have an interest in the genre imo, not worth it if you just want great new jams

dm is by far my favorite genre and I didn't start at the beginning
|
| |
im not saying to get into it you have to start at the beginning. im saying if you are recommending it would be better to start with the predecessors of the genre than something "accessible" like idk cannibal corpse.
|
| |
plenty of people get into genres from new releases, that's fine. but personally if i was recommending I'd start with earlier artists.
|
| |
snox listed some good albums though. i'd rec those to someone starting off in dm, with the addition of none so vile et al
|
| |
and for the record, here in after is so bloody good, but i can understand not passing that album off to someone who has never heard death metal/immolation before

i'd never start with none so vile lol
i feel like people should just start w opeth or cynic, or even modern dm

First DM for me was Arch Enemy - Wages of Sin. Then At the Gates (thank you, iTunes Essentials) and it was off to the races.

Start with Altars

more like progressive metal is ass and so is """modern""" style death metal, unless it's left-field stuff or good classic worship and in both cases a neophyte won't get much out of those
better start with good ol' 90s classics

i just remember many years ago when relentless tremolo/double bass + constant growls was an absolute turnoff to me and melodic or more accessible stuff made it easier to get into the scene
its also not up to you what people """get much out of""""" and what is """"""""ass"""""""""

but it's like telling people to get into black metal with agalloch
they're not listening to the real thing, no matter how good that may be
|
| |
Death metal didnt get any fancy pants Ulcerate in '82 and neither should you
|
| |
idk I thought none so vile was fucking awesome when 15 year old me heard it lol its not really that inaccessible imo... Effigy was a harder album to get into

"Start with how the world started with dm. Death metal didnt get any fancy pants Ulcerate in '82 and neither should you"
what a surprise, snox saying dumb shit. it doesnt matter how someone gets into it as long as it makes it easier for them.

@valkyrion yeah but whatever the "real thing" is typically conflicts with the stuff the person listens to, because they've likely heard bits of the renowned 'real thing' first and it didn't click w them
I mean in terms of black metal you could consider agalloch, deafheaven and krallice as trash, but for the average individual they will be easier to get into and almost certainly will make listening to burzum and darkthrone easier
