They had their moments.

Saying that Metropolis pt 2 and I&W are mediocre should be consider a crime against decent people

Illumination Theory is the worst "epic" they've done to date. It has no feeling and LaBrie's vocals are just horrendous

It follows the exact same structure as count of tuscany too, and while that song was decent I guess, illumination does everything worse. Not that it's terrible or anything

The Count of Tuscany feels better and has that tense verse, which the music complements perfectly.
Yeah, it's not bad, but just average. I really didn't like the last section in the song, where it tries to be epic like Octavarium, but falls flat on its face

The worst is when they try it on The Bigger Picture, trying to be so inspirational. They should have gotten a drummer who wanted change, unlike Mangini, or just have that 5 years break that Portnoy suggested

Album Rating: 2.5
Not just the Bigger Picture, they do it in every song on here besides the instrumentals and enemy inside, and it all just falls flat

They had it, now they're just overdoing it because they still think they had it

His new guitar is gorgeous, the music doesn't do justice to it at all

Fucking enjoyable song

The Looking Glass was a highlight for me at first, but now I just can't even listen to it. The chorus is
great, but everything else is just so uninspired. Surrender To Reason is the best on here in my opinion

naah, this album is rock solid. you just have to take it for what it is, and not what it could be/should be/what previous albums were.
false awakening suite is boss.

False Awakening Suite is okay, it has some decent riffs, but I don't like the idea of a 3-part 3-minute song with too many riffs; it's just too disjointed.
For what it is the album is pretty solid, I just don't really like what it is. With some songs they really reach what they wanted to achieve with this though; the whole second side of the album is a solid 4. But ugh that first side is like the worst thing they've ever done imo
|
| |
i'll take it for what it is - safe and mostly uninteresting
|

If MP had some lame idea of what "metal" is then so does JP. This is a JP album and it really lacks balls tbh. Black Clouds was so good and this is so meh.
I like hearing the bass though, that's pretty cool.

The songwriting is just poor and lazy and I refuse to compromise

pretty much. even the wanky parts really don't bring it.
It's like an imitaion of DT
