"yeah this isn't nearly as good as Somewhere.... They need to go back to a concept album. "

you have this completely backwards, this is the concept album, not their debut. the bands has stated numerous times that somewhere... was not a concept album, all but three songs were about personal experiences.

i would 5 this but i just can't bring myself to do it because i know that they are capable of more. i love this record, but their first one was definitely better.

also, what is it with the same 3-4 users that dislike this record accounting for more than half the comments in this thread? i swear there are at least 100 comments where rosa randomly pops in to inform the userbase of his distaste for this album.

its pretty self-explanatory, i'm saying that this is a concept album, and that their last album is not.

I respect your opinion, but this doesn't really make sense when you listen to the two albums.

it's not even my opinion, it's literally been stated by the band. somewhere... was about personal relationships in jordans life. three songs on that album (new storms, last blues, and guilty bodies) tell the story of a broken marraige, but the rest are all autobiographical. this album, however, is written as a series of short stories and poems by an unnamed narrator. interspersed between these are a series of letter or poems written by the narrator (a departure, a letter, a poem, and a broken jar.) i agree that somewhere... is much more thematically consistent, but this album was actually designed with a concept in mind.

The band can proclaim whatever they want, but the fact is that album feels like a concept to me where this one doesn't. Music is personal. It's up to the band to make it, and it's up to me to interpret it.

I could care less about the concept, if the music is terrible

i've got this on vinyl, and it comes with a lyric booklet that distinguishes between lines where the narrator is talking in his own voice and lines where he's telling a story.

this is a quote from an interview with the vocalist.

"You know, our last record [2008's Somewhere at the Bottom of the River Between Vega and Altair] everyone wanted to call a concept album, but I was very reluctant to admit that. [With] this one, I'm a little bit comfortable saying it is. The thing about a concept record is that when you talk about a concept record, people have a kind of pre-perception of what that entails. It's so story-based and so operatic, and when you think of it that way, it's a little bit misleading because our record is not really a typical concept record in that there's not a specific story arc, a rising action, a climax, and a conflict and everything. But there is a linear narrative throughout: There is a character, and there was a consistent idea behind every track on the record, and the structure of the record as a whole."

i realize that its up to the listener to interpret things, but ultimately it is the work of the artist, and if they say that its a concept record than it is. that doesn't mean you have to see it that way, i'm just saying that was their intent when writing it. i agree that somewhere... is better though and i enjoyed the concepts and themes more on that record (probably because i can relate to them so well) but i still think this record is great too in its own way.

i think its pretty obvious that the narrator is basically a stand-in for jordan, especially since a

lot of the stories are about things that have affected him and those around him, and there are a lot

of references to grand rapids where he's from. but i think the whole literary device of speaking

through a narrator allows him to approach things lyrically from a different angle than he's been able

to in the past.

This may be a concept album on paper, but it's damn near impossible to tell when you're actually listening to it. It should be apparent by how much research you had to do just to adequately get the point across. I like these guys, and what they're doing, but I don't know if I agree with their view of a concept album.

i suppose the term "concept album" means different things to different people. this is a pretty loose concept, the songs can still be taken on their own and have their own individual meanings, which i appreciate.
