"The production doesn't really have anything to do with this album's greatness."

It really doesn't. I'm pretty indifferent to the production here. It's very dry and not all that atmospheric. The music makes up for it in spades, though.

depends if "greatness" is the actual quality of the album or its legacy. because that supposedly-recorded-in-a-forest production detracts a little from the actual album sound but was huge for its reputation, since they were basically giving Capitol records the finger.

I'm definitely talking about the album's quality. Because yeah, the production is definitely what makes this album notorious.

I'd be curious to hear this album with some decent production.

the production plays a huge part in this, and zaru's experience with it is kind of case and point. this record's production infamy withstanding, is very alienating to uninitiated black metal listeners and a good run-through to see if you have the meddle to delve into rawer black metal. it's production is literally make-it-or-break-it. for you to be indifferent is okay, but the piercing frequencies are a turn-off to a lot of people, and a point of attraction to others. production in black metal has always been as vital as the guitars, drum, and bass, because it more than anything translates the essence of what the artist was attempting to convey to the listeners

word is that the recent remaster softened it up quite a bit.

also, i think listening to the remaster is *fine*, but if you want the true experience of what this album offers in its purest form, you listen to the original. just my two cents.

"because it more than anything translates the essence of what the artist was attempting to convey to the listeners"

for example, "nobody every calls me so I use my answering machine to record music instead"

See, I agree with this just fine. I just don't think this album is an example of that. The production is shitty just for the sake of it. As Sevengill said, it was then flipping Capitol records the bird. It has no greater artistic purpose.

It's not just flipping the bird, it's making a statement against the commercialization of black metal and the scene's "death". That seems pretty artistic to me.

also, the production was made in mind to recreate the lo-fi/demo feeling of the band's they enjoyed. it holds a sense of nostalgia and wonder to it that i think still endures to this day

Sorry - it was Century Media, not Capitol. Not sure what Capitol has to do with anything.

You might be right. I'm still not a huge fan of the production myself, though.

fair enough, i was just trying to make a case as to why i think the production is an important element ;]

it's also not my favorite production job, but i do enjoy it

ya Century, my fault. that other huge "C" label.

I'm in the middle on the production...yeah it was a bold move making it intentionally old-school black metal but it was also a chance to show that black metal deserves more respect, even if it's not supposed to want it.

listening to a vinyl remaster track on youtube and I don't dislike it as much on an initial listen :3 more bass, fuller sound, sounds more like standard bm instead of the more ear-piercing sound of the original. Gonna try to give it a more serious listen sometime, though.
