Honestly if they went the thrash route they would have ended up like Slayer; respected by the hardcore fans
but no huge global recognition. They made a business decision, though I think they could have done much
better after Black Album.
To rephrase, hardcore fans definitely respect Metallica but I mean respect for not "selling out."

^Agreed about the Slayer remark. I don't know if they created this album with $ in their minds but I enjoy the music and it's all that matters for me. This is the album that got many people into heavy metal.

I'm comfortable with my rating for this, one of the most average and harmless albums I've ever heard

A lot of this is just a flatline to me, especially compared to the two before this

classic indeed, amazing achievement for hard rock and metal

Album Rating: 2.5
The only real reason I appreciate this album was because it exposed masses to their older and superior first four albums, especially Ride the Lightning.
|
| |
Yup. The first four albums were the golden years. Then, this mild turd came around. Once you go
black, you never go back (to being a legit metal head)

Album gets too much hate. It is a step down but there's still some sweet songs on here.

Album Rating: 2.5
But the sweet songs are the minority for me. I found Countdown to Extinction to be a better accessible album by a thrash band than this.
