Dave Grohl was a beast, although overall I think I prefer Matt Cameron's style.

In a nut shell Danny dude.

These were literally an alternative to metal which AIC, and Soundgarden weren't.

Yes there were others in the underground who were fucking great (Dino Jr, Husker Du, Pixies etc.) but if you were 12-14yrs old, angsty and disillusioned and everything else seemed "silly" Cobain was the man who brought forth the message of the alternative and blew the doors open.

PJ were unbelievable as well in fairness. Smashing Pumpkins, Breeders.

Sigh.

Yeah, Ten is fantastic and all, but it just wouldn't have clicked the same with angsty teens. Same goes for SUK, as much as it rules. Dirt requires the proper mood to click as well.

This was something much more accessible and easier to click with.

And I've never been a Nirvana fanboy.

I put me hands up I'm Nirvana fan boy city, I think around Vitalogy I may have preferred PJ but to this day Nirvana are the ones to turn up LOUD anytime and still raise the old hairs on the neck.

If I were to rank album openers for the Grunge Tetrarchy, it's probably be:

"Once" > "Dem Bones" > "Smells Like Teen Spirit" > "Drown Me"

Much as SG rules, "Drown Me" doesn't hit me that hard as far as openers go.

Serve the servants.

"Teenage angst has paid off well, now I'm bored and old"

Well and truly obliterates the rest.

One day I'll make a list of fave openers. I need to take time before I do that though...

Closer-wise, it goes:

"Would?" > "Release" > "Like Suicide" > "Something in the Way/Endless, Nameless"

Of course, many will disagree.

"Something in the Way" is pretty cool, but I still wouldn't put it above "Like Suicide".
