I decided to listen to Blackwater Park because I’d never heard Opeth before and they were all really acclaimed albums but it’s just average black metal except really polished instead of sounding like it was recorded in a dumpster. I don’t get it, am I missing something?

for me Blackwater Park was my introduction to music that was heavier than Tool. i think that's mostly the place it holds for most people, in that it's not supposed to be incredibly wild and out there or innovative or w/e, it's just a nicely produced, accessible prog metal album with death metal influences that was a formative album for people who played guitar in high school

honestly i think the something you're missing is being a kid in the mid 00s/early 10s with access to youtube for the first time lol

Oh no, I had that. Except I got Scatman John and 009 Soundsystem

i don't think i'd ever actually heard anything with growls before and I was mesmerised when the folk elements first came in lol. i must've been like 13/14, don't think i'd discovered sputnik yet. this was back in the full album on youtube days

Also I appreciate you giving me a solid reason. That makes sense, thank you. I apologise for being rash. Maybe I should give them another go

Woah, TWO people who don't like Opeth, on the same page? Don't think I've seen that before.

Good work Jas.
