I just dont think SNW is as great as you guys do, I even prefer Ohms over it.

To me SNW, Koi, PM and DE all have that dreamier sound, but DE is clearly the strongest of the bunch with koi right behind it.

“It doesn't break new ground nor does it evolve the band's stylings, but it is a quality Deftones album that will move into my permanent rotation. I think listenability is a very undervalued feature when rating an album. I think we correlate high ratings with an album that's pushing the envelope or subverting expectations rather than associating high ratings with an album that is just consistently great from beginning to end. It's hard to get 11-track albums where every single song has something you can remember and contains zero filler.”

This is a really astute observation, well written. I wasn’t able to pinpoint exactly why this wasn’t quite a 5 for me, I just knew it wasn’t quite there. But I think the reasons are exactly what you’ve eloquently communicated. A 5 needs to be special in the sense that it breaks new ground, pushes the envelope, subverts expectations, pushes the boundaries of the genre etc.

This is a great fucking album but it doesn’t quite accomplish any of that imo. It’s special in the sense that it’s a great fucking album, but it doesn’t exactly stand out in any other sense. Minor quibble obviously, it’s still a 4.5.

“Around the Fur to Self Titled flows better than anything else in their discography”

I agree wholeheartedly with this first part of your comment.ATF-WP-ST is the holy trinity, their three best albums (sorta like Manson’s holy trinity Antichrist-Mechanical-Hollywood, only Deftones have one of the most consistent discogs around and MM’s is all over the place).

DE, Koi and this are next tier imo. I’d pretty much put SNW right alongside those too tbh

That being said, as a cohesive whole, this album does flow incredibly well. This, ATF and WP are the best in that regard.

Agreed! Yet, being headup a little out of the box I think this is 2nd in terms of flow. Of course atf is a much better and iconic album.

Yeah this is pretty comfortably their 3rd best, I think. Idk, maybe KNY deserves that title, but there are tracks on there I find very boring. This is more consistent across the board

Adrenaline will always be dead last to me. There’s legit like five good songs on it. Having said that Bored and Birthmark are both top tier for these boys.

just talking that one and this one, at the moment I'd give the edge to Adrenaline (pun intended?)... probs gonna have both at a 4 at some point when I rate this, but more specifically this is shaping up to be closer to a 3.8 from me and Adrenaline probably closer to a 4.2

but yeah the edgier tone (pun intended?) and overall feel/sound is probably a lot to do with why I prefer... don't think there's a single track off of it that I don't dig

True plus Adrenaline is just a fun time. Only Gore is worse than PM imo.

SNW is great because Chino's really unhinged there, best vocal delivery by far of any album. Also has nice diversity. Def top3 tones
