This is the first Isis album I ever heard and it ruined every other Isis album for me because they all sound like prototype Panopticons.

It has moments that are great but I just keep wishing it was as awesome as Pan.

huh. that's interesting. each ISIS record sounds distinctly different to me. the only one that sounds remotely like panopticon is oceanic.
I agree 100% with with silentpotato and eternium (?) said above. entry-level does not equal run of the mill, or crap, etc. imo the reason that they are so visible in the genre is because they are so highly regarded and pretty much one of the benchmark bands, and for good reason. someone just getting into post-metal will probably look to them first, and that's because they pioneered the genre. not because they're more simple-minded or more poppy or what have you. that being said, Backlit and In Fiction own
all in all, there isn't a song on this record that's even average. they're all great, or better.

I would not say all of their albums are drastically different. I just think that for the most part they each have their own distinct sound, or at least distinct features.
Oceanic had all growls, whereas Panopticon introduced clean vocals, which I liked. (besides the point)
it seemed to me that WR was quite stripped down as compared to ITAoT. It seems more accessible to me, which is not necessarily better, it's just one thing that for me distinguishes it from ITAoT.
Even the band members said that they were trying to do too much with ITAoT. If I remember correctly, most/all of the recording was done with the members in different locations?

Oceanic had cleans (so did Celestial), just less of it.

true. but Panopticon was the first to feature them as a significant vocal element.
I guess I shouldnt make broad sweeping statements. you're right clean vocals were definitely present prior to Panopticon. It's just another feature of the album that catches my ear more than their previous stuff.

Wavering is way better that Absence

the sound is a bit different in both albums, id say its a matter of taste.

WR is quite dense. I'm speaking mainly in a basic musical approach. The song structure and development seems more straightforward. ITAoT went in a few more different directions.
I do like ITAoT. It was my first ISIS album. Just didn't enjoy it as much as their other albums, which is saying something because I do enjoy it quite a bit. As I've said, I really appreciate the concept. Read about it a bit and it only convinced me further that it's just great writing.
^^ Good call. At the end of the day it all just comes down to musical taste and preference. Nothing wrong with that.
