Darkspace kinda blends together for me. This has a wider sonic palette with the violin, flutes, choirs, etc. Songs like Le Reve Lucide cycle through several distinct themes so that a 13-minute song doesn't feel that long. Most of the songs have something unique about them -- "the song with the male choir motif", "the song with the distant radio-sound opening", "the song with the descending violin refrain" etc. Even during Darkspace III I tend to, well, space out a bunch en route because every song is "the song with the guitar riffs and spooky background".

Yeah but I think the unrelenting riffs and alien synth fits the theme of suffocating deep space and existential terror whilst this project is frostbitten but has a lot more beauty and breathing room. I prefer paysage projects nowadays but for a long time darkspace blew my mind

that's not to say that Darkspace isn't super cool. just -- yeah, I prefer the mountain landscapes to the suffocating cosmos. I should revisit Darkspace to see if it strikes a different chord.

Agree hard on the analysis. Nowadays it’s hard for me to sit through Darkspace because it’s just so unrelenting - like space. For this, there is no mental taxation.

I assume when it goes into the Hatebreed riffs that we’ve suddenly encountered an extraterrestrial and we’re getting ready to knock the cunt into the next galaxy

One of the many things I love about this album is that if you feel like the progression gets a little dull after spinning it a bunch of times you can just shuffle it and because he puts a few seconds of wintery ambience before and after every track, everything still blends together nearly as well as when you play it in order.
I never get tired of this. Spin it once every few months and this 5 is going nowhere
