Homme was a bit ahead of the game in bringing a little ass-shaking to modern rock. Those obnoxious cheers, that seething setup on "Quick and to the Pointless" - it's half DFA and half DFA 1979. But in other ways these fucks were retrograde. "In the Fade" has the kind of white-boi hip-hop drumming and seasick melodicism that 311 spent a career flogging. "Tension Head" even begins with the sound of something smokable being lit - lame. Acoustic instrumental "Lightning Song" sounds like a No Code reject. What's left is a clutch of good stoner riffs, two great singles, and, in "I Think I Lost My Headache," the answer to the question "What would it sound like if Led Zeppelin and Van Dyke Parks were commissioned to do a Bond song? This is not a good question to ask
