This is significantly more creative and has more personality/individuality than their last 2, easily. It’s not fair to say they’re simply dialling it in, even if you’re not sold on the results. You cited Pantera as an example of quality though, so perhaps this is a lost cause.

some bands just become forgotten and its not the constant changing of the meta its what they record; take pantera for example love or hate the band was consistent at what they did; but opeth is prog so they can do whatever they want but consistency is key and i truily believe they lost that feel after deliverance

I didn't know of Opeth until Ghost Reveries. I discovered them on the Music Choice metal channel of my local cable company. The song was The Grand Conjuration. The rest is history.
It will always be my favorite Opeth. Perfect album.
