Ha, not surprised the title track is trash live. Makes for a timely toilet break on the album too, great to think about the music you'd rather be listening to next

My conclusion is half this album is a 'studio/headphones' album. Pretty much tracks 1-6 plus Carin and Guilty Party can work live.
The rest are album cuts through and through.

Like that you have both Lemonworld and Slipped in your top ten, forever bewildered by anyone who disses those.

'Slipped' live was incredible when I caught them before.
Was a bit gutted checking the tracklist for the first show at Hammersmith...they played 'Lemonworld', 'Slow Show' and 'Geese of Beverley Road'.
'Vanderlyle', 'Secret Meeting' and 'Lucky You' were all still excellent but I'd rather have had the three from that first night.

Ngl if they don't play Slow Show when I see them someone's going to get a serious talking to. They can play literally any combination of songs off the last 5 albums and I'll be happy as long as that's one of them.

Boney, we don't talk about that :D
Katie was fuming...I had to try and explain that sometimes band miss out songs that are considered their best.

"Makes it clear they have better songs now, esp for a live show. A bit like Radiohead playing the title track off 'The Bends' live I'd imagine. Blast from the past but...time has moved on."
Heresy. Burn the witch.

Problem is that band has so many perfect songs that inevitably they're going to have to leave a lot of them out.
What you say about many of the songs on this being studio pieces rather than live songs makes sense, there's a level of meticulousness in the layering here that transcends most of their other stuff. However I like to think all of them except for the title track have a strong enough song at the core that they will translate fine live - it's just a question of how much they try to replicate the studio version.

Album is without joy and not in a good way like High Violet.

Ed a lot of the older 'foot tappers' struggled held up to the new ones. They're just not as powerful live anymore. The way the Dessner's play their guitars now is totally different, a lot of rock star heroics, and stuff like 'Apartment' sounds really antiquated stood next to the new breed.
On record they're still great though of course.

Keep listening Zak, they're becoming more of a democracy imo - in that the star of the show isn't always Berninger now.
The creepy twins are taking over.

Boney all the overly fussy studio songs died on their arses - I'm sure 'Empire Line' would have suffered the same fate too.

Basically I don't think the Dessner's hearts are in the old strummy rhythm guitar stuff like 'Apartment' - it's all gone a bit more experimental/guitar solo-y.
It really just sounds 10 times better than the faster paced old stuff live, you really hear it, chalk and cheese.
'Secret Meeting' was great though, that had some punch.

Dessner is no longer holding on to the side of the pool, he’s dragged the band in and their all there treading water. Matt has done a wee.

Nah, it was the drummer in the pool. That's where drummers go.
The new stuff that worked live was the best of the night...the new stuff that didn't work was a new low.
Wasn't much in between. The 'Kid A' effect :D
I maintain this album is class.
