I'm not Rowan, obviously, but that doesn't seem like what he was doing. He was responding to the 'uber corny "uplifting" background yelps are hilarious' comment, which is... a weird comment (and, I think, probably disrespectful, if said w/ knowledge of context; or overly cynical w/o said context), and is itself... not a good argument for why the song is bad. Not that it has to be.
I mean, bad last two pages in general if the metric is sound analysis of music. I don't really understand the problem with meeting cynical, dismissive comments with equally cynical, dismissive retorts, which you too are doing ofc and is the Sputnik way.

i'm sorry sir blushful, but [candid visor down], like, i wouldn't criticise those vocals by the same brush in and of themselves, but just as the song is corny so too is their *incorporation*. the real argument here [were it heaven forbid to be about the music] would be over whether or not they play a role within the song that scratches any noteworthy itches without the aid of personal or cultural tie-ins (i would say not really; as you said, they're an inoffensive component [of a rather derivative heartstringland rock song]), whereas rowan's argument makes the Discourse contingent on their otherwise-not-hugely-conspicuous heritage and not, uh, the rather innocuous way they actually play out.
this does not sit comfortably with me because imo those voices are not rly a viable bantering chip to bring into this otherwise wonderful meeting of

I get that. I think what I like about their incorporation is that they do sit pretty innocuously in the background, whereas in the last single 'unison', similar samples helped form the actual climax of the song. Like there, they're pretty important texturally -- production-wise, I think they add a lot of colour. But here, they're like this soft, incessant, unignorable hum. Which feels thematically significant in a song about the hole/vacuum left by the loss of a person (whose 'presence' or memory or whatever feels adequately represented by those samples). It also tracks really well with the way the band have been eschewing the longer, grander arena rock stuff for this kind of to-the-point, heart-on-sleeve type, yes, derivative heartstringland rock song. Damn good derivative heartstringland rock song but!!!
The heritage argument isn't one I really care about, either, but I don't think it's just context. I think it ties in nicely with what this song and what the last EP and what I assume the album will be doing -- thematically, but also musically. I don't read 'uplifting' from the samples, I guess. Definitely, like, comfort, and I think they're... propulsive in an interesting way. But I don't think they're designed to evoke any kind of exoticism. In fact I think they're almost matter-of-fact in the way they're used? Very lacking in histrionics? I don't know, I'm tired.
