Actually I do rate Die Hard a 4.5 as within the genre it is the best at what it does...same with this album. Ok there's probably something stopping both from being 5s but why not a high rating for something being highly entertaining and effective in what could be considered a lowbrow genre (action movies/aggro hip hop)

I don't do subgenres of hip hop

If they rap it's all rated relative to me.

I've also never seen die hard so idk

I rate stuff on it's intentions more than genre - I don't think RtJ are trying to keep it 'for real' and gritty, they aren't aiming to make something profound like Illmatic, so I'd never pull it up for being nothing like that sort of more serious statement...even though both are rap/hip hop.

Bullshit.

This album is completely wannabe-profound.

Killer mike thinks he's a "pan Africanist activist". Have you heard his pretentious Ass giving speeches for Bernie? LOL he tries to use proper English and fails it's absolutely hilarious

He even claims he's a scholar or some shit in this album. "Intelligent as a professor" or something. They are both delusional fools.

As long as you don't understand black humour and an over the top narrative I can't really fault you for misinterpreting an album

You can't say it's an over the top narrative when they preach the same things irl

No aids i was just saying it's funny how petty Internet grudges are, relax

I guess I don't seek out any of their irl quotes

Coming primarily from a rock background I learnt long ago not to give two fvcks about how artists carry on in the real world (spoiler: a lot of them are under qualified to talk about anything other than their music) - if that isn't the case with hip hop fans then that at least explains why it's a non issue for me

The lyrics and themes, however dumb at times, perfectly suit the music at hand

Yah well you'd probably hate this just as much as me if you listened to them irl

When you realize this album isn't a joke and it's actually trying to be profoundnits downright hilariously bad

Thursday in the danger room is a classic and carl Tickerson is a banger

The rest is pretty much awful and ruined by pitifully dumb politics imo

I agree those are easily two of the best songs on the album, maybe if I watched all the interviews and met a large enough cross section of their fans I'd dislike the band more due to those associations

The stuff I've watched of El-P and Mike has just been them goofing around and talking about the music, I guess I've been lucky so far, I'm certainly a little wary of the fanbase if it's full of misguidedly politically engaged dunderheads because I'm sick of all that (hyper-entitled online petition warriors boo hooing then admitting they actually forgot to get to the polling station and vote last election, etc)

I'm with doof in that I could care less how these guys act or what they try to represent irl. In fact, I don't even care what they preach about in their albums or how serious they think they are coming off. That has nothing to do with my enjoyment of hip-hop or most genres, tbh.

And I don't think these guys are trying to start a revolution; I don't think their fans think so either. But hey, if they're encouraging people to think more in any capacity that's better than nothing.

"At some point in the future, they're going to try to label us a political rap group, and that, we're not. We don't care what party you belong to, we don't care who you supported, we don't care what you're doing tomorrow politically. We care that, socially, everyone of you know: you are absolutely born free, and nothing has a right to interrupt that freedom." - Killer Mike, NPR Tiny Desk Concert

You're allowed to dislike the album based on the politics it represents, or even because of the fanbase Run the Jewels have attracted, but I think the above quote illustrated well how the group, and in particular Killer Mike, have approached their music, and the message delivered in their music.

Not that we're even still talking about the content of this album any more in this thread, as opposed to the broader existence of Run the Jewels, but this really could be a 4.0 album IMO if it cut off the flab in the middle.

'Don't Get Captured', 'Thieves', 'Everybody Stay Calm' are... fine. But they bloat the album out. Shaving them off would have made a lean 11 track album, in line with their earlier stuff. El-P said that he is his own harshest critic, and that nothing on here was overlong or overstayed its welcome, but he was obviously too close to it.
