It's ture that Act III is pretty straight forward in many regards, but I don see TDH as progressive rock anyway. I thought most people think they got better with every album, but now I realise that's not true haha

Act III got me into this band.

Jammed act 1 and like a 3rd of act 2 just now. Act 1 is fricking incredible and I will never understand what people dont like about the main songs on it. 1878 creates such an amazing atmosphere ugh top 10 songs ever written probably

Inquiry of Ms. Terri is top level TDH too

Don't at all understand the lukewarm reception for 1 either

I like act 1 but I don't love it. It just doesn't have that many interesting choruses and melodies imho. City escape is absolutely amazing though (def in my top5 from TDH), his hands matched his tongue also rocks

people here acting like Mr. Usher doesn't slap, c'mon
there is a chasm of quality between V/IV and the first 3, I is unbearably melodramatic

This looks like another band I need to check out (after I work my way through the rest of Modest Mouse’s discog, and Manchester Orchestra’s discog).

See, now I could say the same about Manchester...
Interesting.

This has definitely grown off as time goes on, but still a phenomenal album. It’s not perfect, but it is the best TDH sans Act 2. Such an epic and grandiose album with some of my all time favorite songs.

I'm just getting back into the band after listening to Acts 1-3 many times. I could see myself liking this more than Act 2 with time.

Act IV and V are by far my favorites. I enjoy the other ones a lot (overall quality is through the roof tbh) but I never really understood the hype for II over IV or V.

I need to listen to IV and V again, but II is imo their best out of the other acts. It has a great flow and the story translates so well into the music. Too bad the production isn't great, but it doesn't ruin the experience.

Can these albums be enjoyed even if you don’t follow the story strictly? Like, does it work on another level rather than just as a specific narrative? Because if it doesn’t, that seems like it would limit it in scope.
I’m about to do a discog run on these guys (never heard any of their music), but that’s the element that makes me hesitate and is why I just end up tackling another band.

You can enjoy it if you just pick random albums Lark. I've started listening to them with Act IV. Each album follows a specific narrative that all clicks together with the other albums, but they all have their own little story arc. Get in on these guys Lark, you might be missing out on one of your new favorite bands. They certainly are one of mine.

It's tough because act IV and V are a step up in quality. It's the potential of the band fully realised. Act V is a masterpiece beyond anything else I've heard before. There's a risk that if you start with 1, you might not be a big fan and not be inclined to push on. But it's a small risk because I also think 1 is great. But you should listen in order so you get all of the callbacks and motifs that exist in IV and V.

There are a lot of really clever reprised and callbacks throughout these albums that elevate them to another level. But I have a friend who has only ever heard IV and V and he loves them so it's not like it isn't worth jumping in there. You'd just miss out on some of the bonus perks. Act V is maybe the best album I've ever heard. It's a phenomenal, beautiful journey, and feels all the more special having followed the other albums that precede it.
