Ulcerate is a great place to start. Another recent favorite of mine is Crimson Massacre's The Luster of Pandemonium.

Yeah bro if you don't dig those then you're probably not a dm kind of guy, but I'm gonna assume you'll love them. ;]

I think Bloodbaths - Nightmares made flesh is like THE death metal album for those looking to get started with the genre. I know it's not a classic by any means but it is accessible as fuck

Drown Within is my favorite DM opener. maybe along with Ghost of Perdition (Opeth) and Evil In You (Kalmah).

you know I love opeth, but I don't think they even really warrant being called dm.

I can vouch for Dismember and Left hand path being 2 of the most easy DM albums to get into

the rest aren't really for complete beginners

honestly I'd try a bit of both, old and new

I don't care for much 80s metal and if it was all i heard when i started I would have avoided the genre completely

"All the ones I listed are for beginners since they're all albums that helped carve the genre into what it is, in one way or another."

thats not the point of recing for beginners. good records for beginners are records that will help them get into the genre.

"If you can't begin with the beginning, then it's not the genre for you."

i sure as fuck didnt start at the beginning, and its one of my favorite genres.

Entombed is definitely a tad over produced.
