Think this one just finally clicked for me. But fuck, just absolutely steam-rolled me on this listen, God damn, going to have to reevaluate what I know about the universe.

Crown in the muck just come on and reminded me how great this album is.

This is probably what I'd call the definitive Kayo Dot album. Not the best one though.
|

blue lambency gets a lot of shit but it's probably their best album. this is also fantastic but some songs (especially the opener) go on and on. choirs of the eye is still a classic as well but i don't listen to it as much anymore.

Blue Lambency is really great but Choirs is just in another world.
|
| |
for real? to each their own, but damn man. it's got some of their best melodies and screams. and the manifold curiosity is god-tier
|
| |
ah, gotcha. yeah they're pretty consistent overall (which i suppose is a kind of funny word to use when describing kayo dot), but some of their stuff bores me a little. still need to hear coffins

Manifold is definitely one of the best things they've ever done. When The Antique gets me it gets me hard too. Pitcher is one I've always loved as well. Marathon and Wayfarer range from really really amazing to just regular amazing for me.
I'd say my top 5 KD would be Choirs, Dowsing, this, BLD, Coyote. Maybe switch this and Dowsing on a weird day.
|
| |
the antique is honestly almost as good as manifold. sometimes, depending on my mood, i might like it even more. pitcher is a great break from the intensity of the first track and one of the most straight-up beautiful tracks they've ever done imo

I don't think they're all 5.0s but they all are pretty damn good. Gamma Knife is pretty uninteresting compared to their other stuff in my opinion so I'd say that's definitely my least favourite.
All of Toby's music is so challenging though that it's impossible not to at least appreciate how progressive his compositions are. When I first heard bath back in eighth grade I basically took a step back and reevaluated my life.

| |
i'd have to agree with the gamma knife being the weakest assertion. i'm going to revisit it soon but it didn't do a lot for me.
didn't kayo-dot disband? or was that just maudlin? i haven't been super up to date on music news. i actually still haven't even heard the new maudlin record from 2009

I think Dowsing >
a really big fan of the way they float all the songs in pseudo-free time, knowing exactly how long to milk each passage... like on that album they proved that their band pausing is often better than another band playing as hard as they can
