I don't think that's the reasoning of the term, actually I think that originally "African American" was a PC version of saying "black" because it refers to their skin color and carries racial connotations, "African American" doesn't do so.

Although I think you interpret a bit too much into that term, Fishy. I mean "blacks" or "African Americans" or what have you are now a part of the U.S. and inevitably a part of U.S. culture and the whole "ghetto culture" has gotten A LOT better over the last couple of decades.

How's Adelaide in comparison to Sydney and Melbourne? Also, are you a student or do you work? (I'm interested quite a bit in OZ since if I'm lucky I might be able to do a Master in (International) Comparative Law which would include a year in OZ)

@Fish: It's been pretty prevalent in our thinking for the majority of civilization, keep in mind that nations are a pretty "young" construct and a lot of these nations are also somewehat rooted in such notions. (I get your point though although it seems like you've been "lucky enough" to be raised in "two worlds")

strange that the actual native americans get called indians

Because the first colonists (Columbus etc.) thought they were in India, before they found out they found a new continent.

Pretty sure that's something that isn't entirely conclusive yet. At least regarding the part that they didn't know anything about America, the part that they thought they were in India seems believable.

"And that's the irony of it"

Not entirely, that's only the irony of it given your interpretation of the term. I highly doubt that people who came up with it had that in mind and I highly doubt anyone still has that in mind except for some idiotic (old school) racists.

(not everything was invented for derogatory or discriminating purposes or to express your power over someone, y'know)

@ wolf - adelaide is the 4th or 5th biggest city here (not that we have many)

it's more similar to melbourne than sydney (albeit much smaller) but it's pretty quiet and chilled out with beautiful hills
and a lot of winemakers and there's a good natured rivalry with melbourne mainly based around football

I spent the last few years working and travelling and have just gone back to study this year (science right now,
transferring to animal/veterinary science next year)

where in aus would you go to study?

That's what we were teached in either case. I agree that simple explanation isn't 100% believable. The Vikings already discovered Greenland in the 800's or so, so it's not like Columbus was the first European to set foot on America, that's for sure. Whethere the people in the Renaissance knew about the Vikings' discovery, that's a question which I don't know the answer to.

Nice interview, although the questions are a bit basic. I enjoyed reading it, though.

No chance of a dl of the mix?

Well, yeah basic school education. The gist isn't necessarily wrong, it's more the details and leaving out details. I'm pretty sure I read about a Portugese colonist who actually knew about America - I'm not sure whether he was actually there but I'm pretty sure I read he knew about it. I also think there was a rumor at some point Columbus knew but on that I'm not so sure.

Also, from what I gathered the vikings actually made attempts to go further South (nowadays New England) but got their ass handed to them by the Native Americans.

Well, if everything goes according to my plans (meaning I'll be able to enroll in that uni I'm targeting here) the Master study program would include one year in Melbourne I think.

Quite frankly, I was more hinting to how prices there are (mostly for the basic stuff, groceries, housing and so on), maybe what you can do in your free time and how the folks are.

Agreed, but kind of necessary for a new artist doing his first interview, ya know?

I'll probably set it up for downloads later on!

Sure, but on the other hand aside from just history or influences, it's alway nice to read about some random anekdotes, that can say equally as much about an artist. Also, I don't know how this interview was conducted, but you should try to go more in-depth with certain answers, and ask follow-up questions. That separates a "real interview" from a text with just a bunch of seperate questions.

I've never conducted an interview myself as I'm just too scared to fall flat on my face. So don't take this as hard criticism, but more as some pointers to how I think you could improve your already impressive site. And kudos for actually meeting artists!

"Attention whoring you mean."

Is it really more attention whoring to post something relevant to the artist of this page than it is to have a self indulgent argument about something completely irrelevant that could also be had in a shoutbox?

Thanks Clercq! I'm new to this whole thing as well and am looking to get better.
