I'm not really expecting them to flip the script at this point in their career, but this album was exciting because of the metal influence they touched on. I know some people didn't like that, but I didn't like how they softened on Dinosaurs. The range of heavy/soft songs on this makes it so dynamic and memorable.

Well said sitar.

I can't think of a single band from the 90's that's as consistent as Alice, at least the music they're putting out is still quality even if it isn't gamechanging in the slightest.

It's the Alice in Chains conundrum. People act like if Layne Staley were alive today he wouldn't also be a boring old fart at 51 years old. It's actually kind of insane that AiC managed to reunite with DuVall and put out (in BGWTB) one of the best pure hard rock albums since 1995. What have the "original" lineups of Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins (who all did comparably brilliant things in the '90s) done in the past twenty years?

agreed completely, I might be biased since Alice is my favorite band, but Pumpkins, Soundgarden, and Pearl Jam haven't made a single album this century as good as any of the three Alice In Chains records with William.

King Animal probably came the closest, but I don't really think Pearl Jam or SP have released anything near as good.

Yeah not many other bands from that time can boast such a consistent track record. The only low points for me were Sap and Dinosaurs and even those weren't so bad. Their contemporaries shit the bed way more over the years.

The very idea of playing one of the later Pearl Jam albums ages me several months.

Private Hell is a top ten Alice song. Jesus Christ this album has some gems. Second best album of theirs imo

I just find their newer stuff really boring for the most part. And the production on their newer albums is uncomfortable on my ears

This album can't be compared to the 2 that followed imo. They were decent but this album still has that elusive spark they had with Layne. I still get mad chills from All Secrets Known and t/t.

Those are both great, but the rest is equal or better. You should revisit it some time. And nice dig btw.

Yeah production sucks. It got better on Devil and Rainier Fog but it was perfect back in their heyday
