Both are fantastic artists although I'm more familiar with Aaron Turners other projects (Old Man Gloom, Greymachine, Sumac etc.) than the latter. Their styles are very different though.

Nah but it's still fucking amazing. Serpant has grown into one of my fav tracks from them I love the droney guitar at the end and pretty much the whole atmosphere of the ending

"cover art looks like a van gogh painting"

album sounds like a Munsch painting -- hazy, primal, impressionistic, paranoid

Yep I wish they made at least one more Prog metal album. I really want them to get back together but it still makes me happy that they broke up in the best way possible: no regrets.

Yeah I'd be really curious as to how they'd follow this up, but hey as long as they're all on good terms then everything's cool

Kinda meanders in 20 Minutes/40 Years but mostly everything is incredible on here. That often warm organ sound makes all the difference. They use their Tool influence really fucking well here too.

Oh but 20 Minutes/40 Years is just unnngghhhh. So much yes.

Looking at how they progressed, this does seem like a natural place to pack it up.

Definitely the weak link on here for me but still good.

Don't dig this as much as Panopticon and Oceanic - those albums I really felt the character of the band, this is just good in a slightly more generic way

I wouldn't say it's generic, but it doesn't have the characteristic bite of those two. I think of essential Isis as raw and almost elemental (be it Hive Destruction, Red Sea or Weight) so this album is a bit of an outlier to that.

Yeah, I think this is a case of this album not hitting the sweet spot for my tastes but it's definitely still a well crafted album. Agree, missing some bite

I don't think this is lacking at all. This album comes across as them wanting to put an emphasis on their musicianship and they did it fucking well. They also stayed true to themselves in the process which I find refreshing.

Always will be my favorite Isis album. Fits the "You're on a desert island. You an only take 5 albums with you. What are they?" thing for me

Panopticon, Absence, and this are all on equal footing for me, it'd be near-impossible to pick a favorite. Never got why some people hate on their last two
