Only thing that gets me on this is the clean vocals, everything else is top notch to say the very least.

| |
Focus has aged horribly. It's like a tweaker, it may only be in it's late teens but god damn does it look like it's fucking 30.
|
| |
I'm the complete opposite Redsky, I reckon it's held up pretty admirably. Question though: Do you think you'd feel the same if Cynic had more material out?
|
| |
no, i just hate the production on Focus. I mean i listen to a lot of shitty emo and black metal so production is rarely an issue, but on Focus it pisses me off so bad.
|
| |
Have you always hated the production? As in since you first heard it.
|
| |
Kinda, I first got the reissue that was cleaned up a bit but the way that the instruments were
recorded, regardless of the version, makes it sound so listless and mechanical. It's not exclusive to
that album, as it's the standard early 90's proggy death metal production that i never understood why
people used other than the excuse of not having the bassist get lost in the mix, but it is at it's
most sterile on Focus. It's the only thing that hinders my listening to Focus, as the songs from it
sounded spectacular when I saw them live last year. To be fair, I have the same problem with other
albums of the era, and it's the reason why i never fancied Death's Human as much as his last 2 albums.
I'd kill for Focus to be rerecorded with some low-end.

I admit the production isn't at all amazing, and yeah I have the reissue as well. I just know a couple people (and I was one of them for awhile) who truly hated the production based soley on the fact that they were comparing it (production wise) to Traced In Air which we all know came a whole 15 years later, therefore benefits from an array of advancements.
|
| |
I heard Focus long before Traced In Air was even a rumor.
|
| |
Yeah, I heard Focus a few years back but once I heard Traced I did find it hard to go back to Focus for awhile, simply because of the reason I just stated. But I got over it relatively quickly.
|
| |
for me Focus is still a 4, but it's hardly the classic that people make it out to be.

Got tired of this after listening to it in my car for about 2 months straight, but still incredibly solid.

That's all good, obviously it's your taste. I was just interested to know why ya thought that is all.

I actually had this on repeat in my car while in Vancouver for about 3 hours straight; I pretty much wanted to kill myself after a while.
