I have such a weird experience with Annihilator. Loved the heck out of it the first month of listening, after that it's only been an admirable album for me and I've rarely revisited it - no idea why

Annihilator is pretty great, white light just barely edges it for me. Will have to revisit soon tho, def been a while.

Thanks, yeah I've loved this for so long. It's just so passionately grief ridden and life affirming all at the same time

Volcano is breathtakingly trippy and fucked up

freaked the fuck out hearing volcano the first time. i love the inclusion of it, really adds to the unsettling feeling that you don't know what the album will throw at you next.

It's an astonishing track. Going too far to call it the best here?

This is one of the best double albums ever

One week into my two week Swans initiation program. Before the beginning of the week the only Swans song I’d heard was in 1988 - the acoustic version of Trust Me on the Melody Maker compilation cassette Gigantic (one of the best mix tapes ever). So I eventually get to the highest rated album here and immediately hit a stumbling block. Just not getting this at all. Reading the commentary by Michael Gira on his Bandcamp page then I understand why this comes across as such a disjointed mess. I wanted to give this a 2.5 but There is about an hour of music here that I would give a 4 - the rest is just 2.5 to me. My 4 album would be Red Velvet Corridor, Helpless Child, Live Through Me, The Sound, Blood Section, Empathy, Yrp and Secret Friends. That’s a nice concise and digestible 60 minutes. Now off to start on the Swans reunion phase.

Lol so no Volcano or IWAPIYS, right

Saying that Volcano seems out of place feels kind of redundant, because the very nature of this album is such that it all feels out of place, styles and sounds continually at odds with each other. But there’s just something awkward about the sing. As for I Was a Prisoner - I appreciate it more than I enjoy it. That is one very eerie and disturbing song. The song is definitely more fucked up than me.

That part in I Was A Prisoner where it sounds like Spongebob chanting some evil shaman ritual gives me the creeps every time.

If only I knew what spongebob sounded like. But an evil shaman spongebob does sound pretty creepy! I love the music that starts at 4’04 and for the remainder of the song - like a lost song from Aphex Twin’s SAW 2. I know I dont rate the album very high, but nevertheless Helpless Child and The Sound are so so good.

That juxtaposition of young Jarboe's innocence with her as an adult talking about being a phone sex operator in The Beautiful Days...fucking insane. Gira's third eye was open in 1996.
