Saying something looks 'gay' like that is just weird to me. It's not as if all gay people have an extravagant clothing taste. So if you say something looks 'gay' in a negative context, it sounds to me like you are putting all people of that sexuality onto one pile and saying they all dress badly. In my opinion it's just too much of a generalization which I think is very unnecessary and uncalled for.
