among the earliest forms of writing was the script created by the ancient egyptians, which have come to be known as hieroglyphics, from the greek for "sacred carvings".
ancient egyptian, like every other semitic language, does not transcribe its vowels and thus we're left with the consonant roots and conjugations. as a general rule for transcribing ancient egyptian, the placeholder vowel 'e' is used except in commonly accepted names or words where a variety of vowels sounds are placed either with or without evidence. thus you end up with names such as 'Tutankhamun', but also simply 'Menes', 'Nefertiti', etc.
thanks to the rosetta stone, ancient egyptian is fully legible even if we cant pronounce it exactly correctly. you, too, can write like an egyptian today.

just for egyptian. it has 3 translations of the same message on it, one in hieroglyphs, one in demotic egyptian, and one in greek. since greek is readily available even today they used it to understand what the hieroglyphs meant, and stemming from that we've been able to translate more or less all hieroglyphs
