Fully agree with Doof, shelved the new one before it came out. Very passable but nothing we haven't heard before, comes across as insubstantial.

A very hot take but on first listen every song reminded me of a particular song from the back half of Honeybear or one from Pure Comedy. The song writing is going to have to prove exceptional because stylistically it’s 0% inspiration. It’s an album I’m destined to listen to at least twenty times this year - so far once and a half times so I’ll give it an honest stab.

That's fair enough Doof, I can't argue that really. Regardless I'm going to do my best to appreciate the album on its own terms.

this new album is his best album by far

New one is very boring, half the songs are binnable.
Sadly a 'download the four best tunes' and move on. Just listen to the first four songs on 'Pure Comedy' - they slay the four best songs on the new one.
All it has going for it is it isn't as long (maybe a good thing) and it doesn't try to be so obnoxious lyrically (maybe a good thing for others, not for me)

The new album is so much less in every way, even when compared to Honeybear. It's a middle of the road album to get everyone back on board after Pure Comedy, and it seems to be working (for the most part).

bingo, the praise is baffling

What songs do you rate highly from it Twig?
I think FJM gives good track 3. 'Hollywood' (best on the album)...'True Affection' (best song I saw him perform live)...'Things it Would' (best song on the album) and now 'Just Dumb Enough' (best song on the album)

from the new one? "Mr. Tillman" is the only track that's grabbed me so far. The others are good, but nothing that would get me to listen over Entertainment or Honeybear. Maybe it's a grower, but I'm not counting on it.

Diamonds is the only song I feel the urge to return to

Diamonds? I'll have to listen to it again. I honestly don't remember it. I don't remember most of the album, even though I've listened 4-5 times.

'Disappointing Diamonds' has a Beatles/Elliott Smith feel...I'm just not sure it's an A Grade example of the style
The first three songs are reasonably strong, I also have a soft spot for 'The Palace' even though it just sounds like a direct copied exert from 'Bored in the USA'

I like the title track too. It has that fuzzy feedback guitar going on in the background towards the end, which is a nice contrast to all the smoothness.

It will end up a 3-3.5, I've clocked up three or four full listens now and I just know it isn't going to grab me as much as Pure Comedy
A 3.2/3.3 album if ever I heard one

yeah, 3.3, middle of the road.

I feel the release of his newest, more straightforward album will help this album age around these parts. He couldn't possibly release another bloated beast like this and it makes this all the better for it.

I think there was a knee jerk 'meme album!' response to this one when really - strip it down to the eight best 'normal length' cuts and it's prob his strongest release by conventional taste.
Sometimes hating on an album is irresistible - I mean, I know that more than most
