Yap it felt like a 4. When I refereed the setback I wasn't comparing to the previous ones...but with Blackwater or Reveries where they go DM, blend the acoustic, but riff and rock m/ in a very identifying manner...which I seriously appreciate more to transcendent ways lol but I'm aware I'm still in the 90's here...however I can see that "rocking" I talked on Still Life already.

Amen Corner is the underrated gem on here.

Haha, yeah, very true. They go a long way further after this, crystallising their sound further with each record. This for me hits the sweet spot though, between conciseness and aggression and prog influences.

This was the record where I realized why Opeth are considered to be a legendary act. A class release and could very well be a 5 for me with time.

hum...I see I see...I really prefer when they go jazzy, when they added the organ, when they go prog pink floydish and esoteric af all at once with DM...the djembe on Ghost Reveries f.e. makes me crazy delighted lol

Totally valid point man, GR is without question at least equal to this in quality. It just comes down to taste.

Their pre-BWP material is a lot more rough around the edges.
GR is more polished and has a lot more melody present.
So yeah, just comes down to taste.

I like it rough (don't get me musically nor sexually wrong here friends). I'm talking about riff rocking, identity and mixing influences. I can tell the difference right away on Still Life m/

Yeah most do but there is definitely like 3-4 eras of Opeth, what makes them so great tbh.

Uuugh, and also:
How underrated is The Amen Corner?! That track is just a riff-fest, every single one better than the one before.

3:13 - 5:17 is easily the best moment of that track and one of the best 'peth moments in general
The bond we never spoke of: once stark and enticing, now slowly smoldering to dust...
