Been listening to this a lot and finally figured out why it never clicked with me. It's cause it's totally back-loaded while the front half is either bland or gimmicky. The interlude in Separating The Seas is awkward as fuck and the cleans on Ghosts are so atrocious. Broken Promises is a banger though.

Back half is so much better [2]

The "experimental" parts on this album are just such duds. Hate the surf rock part in whatever song that's in.
New album does much better.

The genre-bending interludes have always been really hit-or-miss unfortunately. When they work they really work though.

The genre bending interludes make me cringe, not gonna lie

yeah there's really none of that in the new album. There's more focus on the guitar work and melodies in it.

Ghosts is one of their best songs, Matt is a killer drummer too.

Matt is my favorite metalcore drummer for sure

I think the guy from Misery Signals has him beat imo

Both beasts.
Always held Shannon Lucas in high regard too.

Is that the Black Dahlia guy? I don't think he's super interesting as a drummer, but his endurance is insane.
|
| |
Yeah, he was All That Remains’ drummer on the Fall of Ideals record too.

I was literally just about to mention whoever the drummer was on that album caught my ear too. Nothing flashy, just some crazy stamina on those rolls and double bass.

Ye dude is a tank, I appreciate endurance as much as skill tbh.

Ghosts sucks give me a break. One of the worst on this.

Constellations and Messengers are the only albums by these guys I like anyway.

I started with Constellations so Messengers just felt annoyingly underdeveloped thus I never formed any attachment to it. Composure is a tight tune though

more or less agree, loooooove Thrill Seeker though
"I started with Constellations so Messengers just felt annoyingly underdeveloped"
Yeah I can definitely see that, Messengers is literally the same thing over and over again. On Constellations they actually started doing different stuff. Still love the little jazzy(maybe?) break on Ocean of Apathy
