It's the usual trigger response to the argument "I think this popular thing is total rubbish = all those millions of people were wrong"
I encounter it all the time because I'm just as much of an antagonist here :D

Nevermind changed the world. It was the perfect record at the exact perfect time. A perfect storm, if you will.
When I said Ten is the seminal album, I used the wrong word. Its definitely the best. But yeah, Nevermind was the explosion.

To be honest I was caught in a conflict around ‘92. I always flip-flopped between which was the best.
This was more all out ‘rock’ like we’d never heard whereas Nevermind was unlike anything else. Both were life changing.

I very distinctly remember hearing Teen Spirt on the radio for the first time and rushing out to Best Buy to get the album. 11 year old me was fascinated.

Pearl Jam for me

Back then MASSIVELY! Now it’s still an almighty album that I would still term essential.
Saw the band a few years ago and they were phenomenal but it has to be said Vedder is a bit of a cunt.

The recent PJ documentary made me respect this band that little bit more.
The recent Nirvana documentary (montage thingy) made me respect that band a tiny bit less.

"Saw the band a few years ago and they were phenomenal but it has to be said Vedder is a bit of a cunt."
1. Agreed, they are one of my favorite live bands ever
2. What in the fuck do you mean about Vedder? He seems like one of the most laxed, chill dudes ever with that level of fame.

The most chill dude ever is Dave Grohl. If I could pick one musician just to hang out and crush beers with, it would be him.

Well yeah, him too but Vedder is definitely up there in the "coolest dudes ever" category from everything I have seen. He spends his money and fame trying to NOT fuck over people (see: ticketmaster or every charity ever) and whenever he talks to fans he comes across as pretty damn genuine to me

Yeah I think Eddie is a dude. Anyone who puts that much effort into a live performance and fucks over ticket scalpers is ok in my book.

"Eg if you’re under the age of 35 just concede defeat on this my dude, this is not something you experienced so you’re talking from the textbook"
I'm not. I was there.
And maybe try arguing like an adult instead of playing your desperate age card, which is basically like accepting defeat.
lol to even view this in terms of victory and defeat, jfc man. Give your acc back to the real doof.

"At the time it’s clear as day. Metallica’s big popular moment was the black album. It was absolutely dwarfed by Nevermind and Nirvana in general."
The Black Album sold 6 million more records than Nevermind in the states. We'll never know because of Nirvana's relatively short run, but Metallica has endured all these years with almost frenzied popularity. This statement seems ridiculous to me.

It isn’t. Metallica were big sure, but Nevermind was more of a phenomena.
I’m sure Def Leppard sold comparable amounts of records to ‘Appetite for Destruction’ but don’t try and tell me they ruled the world like G n’ R did for two years.
I’m not sure you chaps get it.

I remember the Black album being absolutely massive, literally everywhere. I think Nirvana gets bumped up because they launched such a huge cultural sea change, whereas the black album was just pure saturation.

I dunno dude, I think Black Album and Nevermind were pretty equal. Black Album was literally fucking everywhere - random stores in malls, sporting events, even fucking field day at my school. So was Nirvana, but it's not like Metallica didn't even come close or anything imo

Hans, that’s what I’m getting at - ‘Tallica were big but their success was a slow build and their fans were ‘Tallica fans, an established demographic, plus then you had your mainstream crossover.
Nirvana seemed like 75% of anyone under 25 in the developed world and they came out of nowhere.
‘Nevermind’ was instantly hailed a classic and put near the top of ‘best ever’ lists. The black album was just a big commercial album, critics treated it as such.
Cobain was ten times better known than bleedin James Hatfield - get real people lol, my gran would have know who Cobain was and recognised his picture. They were everywhere. ‘Tallica were still ‘heavy metal’, primarily for the black tees.
