The Outlaw Torn is arguably their best closer tho

Interesting. For me the Outlaw Torn is that one superfluous, backstabbing partypooping song here on an otherwise almost enjoyable album

"it's great coming in here out of context thinking you're talking about Hetfield with that post"
Hahaha xD
On topic as well: I can't stand this album. It's not the worst thing i've ever heard but i remember being so disappointed when i got it...
I really liked the black album even though it wasn't thrash at all anymore. In fact, it's the reason why i liked it more than AJFA...
Load is too unfocused, imo. There's no great song on this album. The compositions aren't as good as old albums (obviously)...
I guess this was to be expected but at the time i didn't know much about the band, Cliff Burton, Mustaine and all that stuff.

I have unfair disposition towards this album in general more-so then when the Black Album came out. Black Album I didn't like when I first heard it; then over the years I accepted the fact it was just a great album by a band that wasn't making the music I was used to hearing. Once taken out of that context you can appreciate it for what it was (a great album). Load to me is the stripped down cheap hooker version. Country tinged, blues and malt liquor. I couldn't get into it.. I felt like I was listening to Metallica covers ZZ Top. All jokes aside, I think there's some great riffs scattered throughout and some good cuts, but as a whole album I can't defend it.. too much bull shit on here.

I respect this album as an artistic expression more than I enjoy it, if this makes any sense haha.

Definitely it was not wise at all to make thrash metal in those years. The grunge thing was eating up everything, even bands like motley crue knew that they would fail if they didn't incroporate grunge into their sound...

Metallica was the band that started the trend of abandoning thrash in order to focus in some other genres that were getting more popular (groove or alternative for example). They saw Metallica's success, they tried to imitate it. A perfect example of that is Megadave.

And Metallica pulled if off better then all of them imo (at least with The Black Album and this)

this album has nothing to do with all that

Yeah can't agree that popularity was the reason for releasing this one. They could have easily released a Black Album 2.0 (of course an inferior one) and make much more money.

Yep, black album is the commercial success. It took five years after for the load/reload sessions to come out. Honestly, I think they just got tired of playing the same stuff and wanted to do something different. I mean this album sold very well regardless, but I think it's more so because of their pen name they already were extremely popular besides the fact. In their minds they could do whatever they wanted. I don't think Metallica cared about the genres at the time.

They only cared about $$$ as we all know.

I think it's easy for people to say a band stopped making good music for money. I don't really think it's the case here. Hell, I remember when people accused them of selling out on and justice with "one" that music video was everywhere. Styles change, people get upset. And justice was this sprawling epic that sounded incredibly different than their previous albums. Black Album to me seemed like the next logical step for them , but this near 80-minute album I don't believe selling-out is the reason behind it. I just think it ain't a great record and they were over their heads. At the end of the day I just want a good record and Metallica stopped making them.

not really sure exactly what effect commercial pressure had on the songwriting process but i can tell you that the band (mostly lars and kirk) were really going out of their way to try to adapt to what was going on in, for lack of a better term, "mainstream" music.

I hear the black album in every popular metal band after it came out. Who sounded like that when it came out besides them? It paved the way. They certainly found the target audience. I would agree that the commercial success of that totally affected their songwriting process afterwards. Than they got over their heads and made not-so great albums. They probably did have it in their mind to tailor the black album to a larger audience for sure and it worked and it was damned good too. It was original with the intentions of gaining a wider audience which by default made them richer and more famous. Damn impressive
