Hypothesis A: surrounded by hangers on and industry yes-men, Mastodon become detached from reality after creating their "masterpiece" CTS and decide that whatever they shit out will be inherently divine.
Hypothesis B: Mastodon have always sucked, and have focused progressively throughout their career on the singular goal of achieving a higher level of suck.
Hypothesis C: Mastodon's latest album "The Hunter" was actually intended as a segue into a reality TV series starring the band alongside late-night darling Jimmy Fallon entitled, "The Creature Lives". The show will air weeknights after "Wheel of Fortune", and will document the band's ongoing struggles to cope with their celebrity status and the hardships of being stereo-typed as "metal".

fair arguement... just didnt find this album all that focused or memorable, though. They can (and hopefully will) do better.

Don't know, from a recent Troy interview they said they were going down this route again.

Then I would say it is to say that they just got tired of writing the type of stuff they did earlier in their career.

To be honest, I don't blame them for trying out a couple of simple albums. Concept albums are fucking brutally hard work.

songwriting is actually really good on this. vocal melodies also rule. the riffs aren't as badass as they usually are (black tongue and spectrelight are a couple exceptions) but the guitar is still really great and fits the songs perfectly.
