It can work either way sometimes bloc... An album can pale into insignificance when compared to a superior album from the same band, OR it could have the effect that you came across. I guess that's why i try to listen to discographies all the way through & in order.

These days I definitely try to listen to discographies in chronological order to avoid having to came back to an album after so many years.

That's what you think, but it's really what Emery is telling you to do.

Honestly, DaveyBoy, I just don't see the major differences that would make people like their first two albums and last two albums, but not I'm Only A Man.

They got a little bit harder on a musical scale with In Shallow Seas I admit, but that's a whole other problem because I don't see how they got heavier with this album when comparing it to Seas. And that's the biggest change I can think of for all 5 albums other than natural song-writing/melody growth and absence of a vocalist.

Yeah, I can agree with that.

I can see where you are coming rom Teacup & agree that the differences are exaggerated by most. But that album seemed more an experiment than anything else... While I still enjoy listening to certain songs off of it, it isn't at all cohesive... & there are a couple of tracks that I just don't like. I still gave it a 3 though.

Yeah, I can understand someone bringing up the cohesiveness of Man. I don't think it's an issue myself, but that reason at least makes sense to me. I think that if they'd continued to push themselves into writing different songs not in the same vain as What We Want, or Seas, and more like Man, then they would have made 1 album that was recieved similary to Man, but also would have made 1 album that would launch themselves into the mainstream because of the diverse and ingenious songwriting finally being perfected. That potential is fleeting now, because they made two albums more along the lines of their first two and I just see cowardice in that. I realize my opinion may not have been the eventual reality, but there was definitly a possibility of it happening, but now is squandered.

"cowardice" may be going a little too far.

It would have been very risky to try out 2 more "I'm Only A Man's"... Too risky imo.
